What to Expect During a COVID-19 Test at Ouch Urgent Care
At Ouch Urgent Care, we’re meeting a critical need for coronavirus testing in our community while also protecting the health of our staff and walk-in patients who are seeking nonemergency health care services that are unrelated to the coronavirus. We offer drive-up COVID-19 testing with no appointment needed at three locations: our urgent care clinic in St. Johns, Michigan, and our temporary sites in Lansing and Alma. We also offer coronavirus testing by appointment only at our Carson City location. Click here to learn about testing at each of these locations.
Safety Protocols Observed at Our Coronavirus Testing Locations
The respiratory illness known as COVID-19 is caused by a highly infectious strain of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that was first identified in 2019. Researchers are still learning about this virus, but it’s already known to spread primarily through person-to-person contact, typically when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even talks in close proximity to another person.
Infected individuals often experience flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, coughing, sore throat, and shortness of breath. However, some people who have contracted the virus will experience no symptoms. Because of this and because complications from the virus can be severe, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that medical professionals wear masks and gloves when administering coronavirus tests. At Ouch Urgent Care, we ask that all of our patients wear masks when reporting for testing or any other health care service during this pandemic. This simple practice, along with frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer, will help slow the spread of COVID-19.
If you seek coronavirus testing at Ouch Urgent Care, we request that you keep your mask on until one of our medical practitioners asks you to remove it to allow testing.
What’s Involved in COVID-19 Testing?
At Ouch Urgent Care, we offer rapid coronavirus antigen testing at all of our testing locations, and the results will be shared with you within hours or on the next day. At our St. Johns and Carson City urgent care clinics, we also offer polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. PCR test results typically are available within a few days. One of our friendly and knowledgeable staff members will contact you with test results as soon as possible—there’s no need to call our clinic.
Both of the COVID-19 tests we offer require nasopharyngeal swabs for sample collection. Here’s a brief description of the sampling procedure:
- Before testing begins, you may be asked whether you have sinus problems, have experienced a recent nose injury, or are taking any medications that can thin your blood.
- The medical practitioner who’s conducting the test will ask you to tilt your head back if you can.
- Your tester will insert a swab (similar to an ear swab but longer) in one nostril, extending it toward your throat, where it will remain for 10 to 15 seconds. The tester will rotate the swab to collect the sample. In some cases, it may be necessary to repeat the sampling in your other nostril. Testing should not cause pain, but you may experience some discomfort.
When we contact you with your test results, we’ll also let you know what your next steps should be. If you are seeking testing because you have COVID-19 symptoms or you’ve been in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus, you should stay home and avoid close contact with others for at least 10 days.
